Wally-Docking: On the Road Again

by Kim on February 26, 2009

Wallydocking

A Luxury Spot for the Night!

We’re hooked on travel! We love being on the road and after a couple of months at home, we’ve hit the road again! Just a few days away this time, but I bet we’ll see some good stuff and have a great time!

One of the things we do that people who “just don’t understand” raise their eyebrows at is what you see in the picture. There is a word amongst the RV crowd, Wally-docking (who knows if it’s hyphenated, one word, or two?).

Wallydocking is the practice of spending the night in the Wal-Mart parking lot! Most Wal-Marts welcome RV’s and we’ve spent dozens of nights this way. It’s great for those overnight drives and you just need a safe place to pull over and catch some zzz’s! And in the AM, you run in and stock up on supplies! Perfect.

So, you can see that we’re hooked on Wally docking (I’ve covered all three potential ways of writing it now!) and if you run over to Hooked on Houses, you can see what some other bloggers are hooked on today!

Come back and see some pictures of where we end up this weekend! Who knows? Wherever!

I heard a whole story on NPR about Wally-docking. When gas was over $4/gallon, it was the ONLY way some RVers could afford to continue going.

Same story also told about RVers who have converted their engines to burn french fry oil, which they could get free from some McDonalds. I didn’t hear the details of FILTERING that oil, but surely they MUST have to do that first.

This is great information, because we are starting to plan a big RV trip for this summer (our first RV trip)!

How funny! I’ve never heard of Wally-docking before, but always see a ton of RVs in WM parking lots. It’s a whole culture I knew nothing about!

Have a great trip!

I love RV’s. I told Sean, when the children are all raised and out of the house, I hope we are still young enough to buy an RV and travel during the horrid winter months. How great would it be to pack up in January and travel all over the south then head back home just in time for spring!?

How cute! Makes me think of my Dad — always calls it ‘Wally-World’ instead of Wal-Mart :)

I never heard of this but how nice of Walmart! My husband and I have been talking about going on the road with an RV. I’m interested to read about some of your adventures.

We’ve done the occasional Wally-docking as well. I can’t stand it when the parking lot sweeper comes in at 5 am and makes a whole lot of racket outside my bedroom :) But the price is right!

Has it already been a few months? It seems like you just got back from that scary trip. That’s a cool way to get where you are going. Kind of reminds me of that Home is where the Heart is movie. Except no one’s giving birth. :)

Came to see your visit to the Nester’s but I’ll be back. I am just putting two and two together that I have visited your blog several times in the past but never connected it with the Remodeling guy – too fun. :)

Makes me want an RV. It’s funny–I read your post about your trip in Moab. I live in Utah and Moab was ALWAYS where we got sick when driving to my Grandparents’ in NM. Not anymore, thank goodness, and never as sick as your son was. Too bad you probably didn’t know we have a really good children’s hospital in SLC, but you were smart to go home fast!

When we finally get strawberries here, I am so trying that pound cake recipe you have below–it looks very tasty. My mom always made angel food cake for shortcake and it’s tricky to make too.
