HTML was completely Greek to me. But over the last year I've done a lot of Google searching and spent a lot of time on W3.org and I'm now making my way pretty easily through even CSS and PHP. So it IS possible for a complete novice to make it! Hang in there. And they were right when they said WordPress was the way to go. You won't be sorry! Keep up the good work!
